It would be very unlikely, if not unheard of, to see a goods train, or rake of wagons, without a
brake van bringing up the rear. So if you already own, or are planning to build or buy, any wagons, you will
obviously need one of these!
Brake vans were a fundamental part of the British goods scene from the early years. The vans provided braking to
goods trains - in addition to the braking effect provided by the locomotive - but they also accommodated the train
guard at the rear of the train, allowing him to better monitor things.
BR, having inherited a large number of brake vans from the earlier companies, soon commenced a building programme,
at first divided between the existing LNER, LMS & GWR versions. It seems that the LNER type became the most
successful, as this was chosen - with some modfications - for all batches built from 1950 on. Of a total of 5248
built by BR, 4922 were built to the ex-LNER or BR diagrams.
These LNER and BR designs included a 16ft long body, with short verandahs at each end, mounted on a 16ft wheelbase
chassis with running boards were fitted to each side.
Our model although reproduced to 1.54" : 1' is more of a representation than a like for like scale replica,
allowing us to produce a reliable and useable model that still looks just the part. All steel construction for the
structural components, with modern engineering techniques, allow this model to be used on a garden railway or club
track alike whether it is used just behind a loco or shunted in a yard, without sacrificing detail.
